Finance Function Excellence in Local Government - Real insight into what works

Your Finance function is under pressure from several directions. Aside from the day to day challenges you are being required to review both the efficiency of your operations (driven by the Gershon agenda) and the quality and nature of the service you provide (driven by the latest CPA guidelines).

How do you, as a leader in Finance Operations square these competing tensions?

How do you

  • take control of demands on finance staff,
  • optimise the organisation of people,
  • maximise the efficient use of technology, and
  • streamline the process for generating information?

There are a series of best practices or characteristics which functions meeting these challenges are demonstrating. We've made an overview of them based on our experience of finance functions in both local government and the private sector, and our practical experience in helping departments implement the changes necessary to deliver them. The document seeks to provide clear guidance that will enable you, as a Finance leader.

We believe a comparison against these proven best practices gives a much clearer indication of your operational effectiveness than pure benchmarks. Benchmarks are subject to structural and definitional differences which means that it is difficult to draw precise comparisons.

Please take some time to review the best practices we have identified and evaluate how your own organisation measures up.
